Local teacher launches children’s literacy book in Newcastle

A Newcastle foundation phase teacher launches children’s literacy book designed for early writing skills for young learners.

Samira Kunhee, a foundation phase teacher from Newcastle, officially launched her educational children’s book, Let Us Learn How to Write with Mr Cat, at Factory Plaza on January 5.

Designed for Grade R to Grade 3 learners, the book aims to make early literacy learning fun, accessible, and engaging.

It supports young learners, teachers, and home-schooling parents through simple, child-friendly methods that build confidence and encourage a love for learning from an early age.

Passionate teacher

Kunhee is a passionate educator with a strong commitment to early childhood development.

Her teaching approach focuses on developing foundational reading and writing skills through meaningful engagement, visual learning, and hands-on exploration.

“This textbook was inspired by my journey as a teacher and by observing how children truly learn,” Kunhee said. “I realised that learning takes time, patience, and meaningful interaction. Children understand concepts best when they can see, touch, and explore them visually.”

Young mother

Growing up with a mother who was a preschool teacher planted the seed for Kunhee’s own teaching career. However, her classroom experience highlighted the need for a learning resource that caters to different learning styles.

“This book was created to make learning joyful, visual, and accessible, giving children the time and space they need to grow with confidence,” she explained.

Let Us Learn How to Write with Mr Cat is Kunhee’s first published educational textbook and marks the beginning of her journey as an educational author. She hopes to expand her work in the future by publishing additional learning resources, including textbooks in the mathematics sector.

Teacher and author

Through her work as both a teacher and author, Kunhee aims to make a positive impact on education within her community and beyond, empowering children with the skills they need to succeed academically and personally.
