Lions host childhood cancer walk
The Newcastle Lions Club invites the community to walk in support of children with cancer.
February 15 is International Childhood Cancer Day and the Newcastle Lions Club is doing its part to support young cancer patients in a meaningful way.
The Lions, in conjunction with the Newcastle Harriers Club, will host a 4km fun walk on Saturday, February 14.
According to Lizè Smith, one of Lions International’s pillars they support is childhood cancer awareness and they host annual projects to raise funds for related initiatives.
“Nationally, many Lions clubs will be hosting the same fun walk on February 14,” said Smith.
The event will start at the Ferrum Swimming Pool in Aquamarine Drive. Registration opens at 07:00, with the walk starting at 08:00.
The entry fee is R40 per participant, with all proceeds donated to CHOC (Childhood Cancer Foundation of South Africa). Donations will also be welcomed on the day.
What is CHOC?
CHOC is a non-profit organisation that supports children and teenagers diagnosed with cancer or life-threatening blood disorders, as well as their families. The organisation focuses on early detection and provides comprehensive psycho-social, emotional and practical support.
Smith encourages participants to make the morning enjoyable by dressing up in fancy dress. Those who prefer something simpler can wear a yellow ribbon or item of clothing, as yellow is the official colour of childhood cancer awareness.
The Lions Club will also sell CHOC Flip Flop Day stickers at the event for R10 each. Flip Flop Day is CHOC’s annual fund-raising initiative aimed at supporting children undergoing cancer treatment.
Community members are encouraged to dust off their running shoes and take part in the walk for a worthy cause.
