New bowlers shine as mixed pairs deliver thriller

Thrilling matches see van Vuuren and du Bruyn secure title.

A pleasing field of 13 teams took part in the Club Nominated Mixed Pairs competition held last weekend.

The teams were divided into four sections

Section winners were Shaun Teasdale and Cherece Delport, who advanced on a countback ahead of Nancy Steyn and Chris White; Trevor Swanepoel and Sue Hutchinson; Bennie van Vuuren and Mariska du Bruyn; and Hannes Willemse and Esther Willemse.

In an unprecedented outcome, both semi-finals were tied at the end of regulation play, requiring an extra end to determine the finalists.

Shaun and Cherece edged past Trevor and Sue 16–15, while Bennie and Mariska narrowly defeated Hannes and Esther 19–18.

The final proved just as closely contested, with neither pair able to gain a decisive advantage as shots were exchanged end for end.

Bennie and Mariska reign victorious

Keeping their composure, Bennie and Mariska eventually secured a 16–15 victory over the gallant Shaun and Cherece.

The competition was a fine advertisement for the club, with newer members stepping up and receiving strong support from more experienced players.

Once again, it demonstrated that bowls is a game for all ages.

Congratulations to all who took part.

Meanwhile, the AME Summer Business League gets under way this Thursday evening, with 30 teams set to take to the greens for several weeks of friendly rivalry, both on and off the green.
