Municipality condemns shooting of councillor
The municipality has confirmed that EFF PR Councillor AE Mkhwanazi was ambushed at her home last night.
Newcastle Municipality has just released a statement condemning the shooting of EFF public relations officer, Councillor AE Mkhwanazi, at her home last night (February 16).
A municipal spokesperson confirmed that Mkhwanazi fortunately survived the shooting and is currently receiving both medical treatment and emotional support.
According to the statement, the incident represents a direct ‘assault on democratic governance‘, as well as the rule of law. “Violence against any elected representative is wholly unacceptable and undermines the foundations of public service and constitutional democracy,” the statement read.
Mayor condemns attack on democratic governance
Newcastle Mayor Xolani Dube expressed serious concern following the incident.
“We condemn this attack in the strongest possible terms. While we are grateful that Councillor Mkhwanazi survived, such acts of violence threaten democratic governance and the safety of those who serve our communities. An attack on one councillor is an attack on democracy itself,” he said.
Police investigate shooting incident
The municipality further confirmed that the incident has been formally reported to the SAPS.
“The municipality is relying on the SAPS to conduct a thorough investigation and to ensure that those responsible are identified, apprehended and brought to book without delay,” the statement continued.
All residents and stakeholders are urged to remain calm and united, to act within the law, and to refrain from any speculation that could compromise ongoing investigations.
Anyone with information that could assist law enforcement is encouraged to come forward and co-operate fully.
The municipality reaffirmed its commitment to peace, public safety and the protection of democratic institutions, stating that it stands in solidarity with Cllr Mkhwanazi, her family and all public representatives.
