Newcastle shutdown: Child struck by stray rubber bullet

The nine-year-old suffered a head injury while police were dispersing an angry mob.

A nine-year old girl was hit by a rubber bullet while police were dispersing violent protesters at KwaMathukuza, Newcastle, this morning (February 17).

It is believed that the protesters were participating in the Newcastle shutdown called for by the uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP) in response to the alleged misuse of public funds within Newcastle Municipality.

Police sources said the protesters started throwing stones at police who were deployed to maintain public order. The officers then began firing rubber bullets in an attempt to disperse the rampant mob.

According to witnesses, the child was looking out of a window at the scene unfolding outside her house when she was struck on the head by a rubber bullet fired by police.

She was taken to Madadeni Hospital for medical attention.
