South African paramedic graduates in United States

Chané Joubert from Newcastle has graduated as a paramedic in Michigan, earning perfect attendance while pursuing her American citizenship.

South Africa showcased its talents on the international stage after Chané Joubert (24), from Newcastle, graduated as a paramedic at the Life EMS Ambulance Innovation and Education Centre in Grand Rapids, Michigan, on February 5.

After completing her schooling at Hutten Park and Ferrum High School, Joubert worked at an ambulance company; igniting the initial flame. “I worked in the admin department, but when I saw patient report forms, I would read through them and create different scenarios in my head.”

Journey to the United States

Joubert left the ambulance company to start her journey as an au pair in the United States.

While living with her host family, she enrolled at EMS Life Ambulance to become a paramedic. She did have an EMT licence, but due to her visa restrictions, she was not allowed to work, saying it was very difficult for her in the beginning.

Overcoming challenges

“Everything was in English all the time, though it’s not my mother tongue,” she admitted. Despite the linguistic setback, she had an amazing support system to carry her through it all.

Despite her difficulties, Joubert succeeded through dedication and hard work, earning the only perfect attendance score out of the 19 students enrolled with her.

Way forward

“My qualification is universal, so if I were to return to my home country, I can use it as well,” she emphasised.

Joubert is currently working towards her American citizenship while working at Life EMS Ambulance.
