Ward 18 residents confront Eskom over decade-long power outage

The Eskom offices were closed and locked, preventing them from entering the premises to seek assistance.

Community left in the dark

Residents of Ward 18, Watersmeet, say they have been living without electricity since December 28, 2015 – a crisis that has now stretched out for more than a decade.

Frustrated and exhausted members of the community gathered in unity this morning (February 20) to demand answers from Eskom about the power shortage that has disrupted their lives for years.

“We just want electricity”

Speaking on behalf of the community, resident Sindy Shabalala said they peacefully approached the Eskom offices near San Marco Centre, seeking clarity and solutions.

“We came as a united community to get answers. We are not here to fight – we just want electricity,” she explained.

According to Shabalala, Ward 18 residents have gone years without power.

Tensions rise at Eskom offices

Despite their peaceful intentions, the situation grew tense when police officers and a private security company were called to the scene.

Residents claim the gates to the Eskom offices were closed and locked, preventing them from entering the premises to seek assistance. This move further fuelled frustrations among community members, who say they have been ignored for far too long.

“We are not leaving”

Shabalala made it clear that the community’s protest is about one simple demand: restoration of electricity.

“We are not leaving until we get electricity. That is all we are asking for.”

The people of Watersmeet say ‘enough is enough’ after more than 10 years in the dark.
