No overtime payments for KZN RTI officers due to budget strain?

Officers who worked during the festive season #NenzaniLaEzweni campaign say they are still waiting for their January overtime.

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport is reportedly facing mounting pressure after unpaid overtime claims by Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) officers exposed budget challenges within the department.

No January overtime payments

Officers who worked extended hours during the festive season road safety campaign known as #NenzaniLaEzweni allegedly say they are still waiting for their January overtime pay. According to The Witness, an internal memorandum instructed commanders to curb overtime where budgets had been depleted, while assuring staff that outstanding payments would be processed.

Department’s plans to pay officers

Department spokesperson Ndabezinhle Sibiya said R17 million has been allocated for RTI law enforcement operations until the end of the financial year, and efforts are underway to fast-track January payments.

The situation has raised concerns about financial planning within the department, as officers await clarity on when their earnings will reflect in their accounts.
