Protea Drive closed after burst pipe causes road to sink

Councillor Abbas Warasally raised concerns about the delayed valve closure due to no overtime being paid.

A burst water pipe caused major disruption in Protea Drive early this morning (February 24), forcing the closure of the road between Azalea Drive and Dianthus Road after part of the road surface sank.

Ward Councillor Abbas Warasally was on scene at 05:00 and contacted uThukela District Municipality. Warasally expressed concern that because overtime is not paid, the valve could not immediately be closed, resulting in large amounts of fresh water being wasted.

“It’s sad to see fresh, clean water being wasted,” he said, adding that the road has also been significantly damaged.

At 07:55, uThukela plumbers arrived. The valves have since been closed and repairs are about to start. Motorists are urged to use alternate routes in the meantime.
