Recycling was encouraged instead of dumping.
The Department of Economic Development, Tourism & Environmental Affairs (EDTEA) conducted a clean-up campaign in Ezakheni D-Section, Ward 4, today (February 25). The clean-up was in partnership with Alfred Duma Local Municipality.
Community members joined the initiative in large numbers, showing their support and commitment to keeping the area clean and safe.
Ward councillor welcomes the team
Ward 4 Councillor L Hlomuka welcomed everyone who packed the hall, before going out into the streets. In his opening remarks, Hlomuka spoke about the importance of cleanliness and hygiene. He said the full hall showed that many community members are currently unemployed. In this regard, he pleaded with EDTEA officials to consider the community when job opportunities become available.
The department also encouraged residents to keep their environment clean and tidy at all times. Illegal dumping in residential areas was highlighted as one of the main causes of dirty and unhealthy surroundings. The clean-up focused mainly on the sides of the roads and areas used for illegal dumping.
Recycling instead of dumping
Community members were also encouraged to practice recycling instead of dumping. Recycling was recommended not only to protect the environment but also as a way to earn extra income.
E-waste recycling
Brochures about recycling e-waste were handed out. E-waste includes electrical / electronic equipment that has reached the end of its life, such as fridges, stoves, microwaves, TVs, radios, cameras and cellphones.
Residents were advised to contact their nearest EDTEA offices for more information on where they can recycle their old electronic equipment.
