erious concerns have been raised about electricity tariffs charged to businesses in Dundee and Glencoe, with claims that some companies are paying for services they are not receiving.
Local business owners allege discrepancies in tariff classifications and supply capacity, and are calling for urgent clarification from the Endumeni Local Municipality.
Supply and billing under scrutiny
One business is reportedly paying for a three-phase prepaid tariff, yet the white phase on the load side is said to be missing. It is alleged that the municipality should have informed the business of the missing phase and advised on corrective measures. As a result, the company is understood to be paying for a full three-phase supply while not receiving or using complete three-phase power.
Further concerns relate to the classification of certain businesses under bulk supply tariffs, despite having a limited capacity of 63 amps per phase.
Bulk supply tariffs generally apply from 100 amps per phase. However, it is alleged that several businesses in Dundee and Glencoe are being billed at bulk rates even though they do not meet this threshold.
Business owners argue that the higher tariffs are placing immense strain on already struggling enterprises. One affected company, which has operated in Dundee for nearly 20 years, reportedly faces a monthly electricity bill exceeding R150 000 and has now closed its doors.
Entrepreneurs warn that without urgent intervention and transparency, further economic damage could follow. At the time of publication, the municipality had not responded to queries regarding the allegations.
