Raceway hosts practice event ahead of oval season opener

Northern Natal Motorsport Raceway hosted a practice day, offering fans a preview of oval racing and future motorsport events.

Northern Natal Motorsport Raceway (NNM) hosted its first oval track event of 2026 on February 28, a practice run to give motor sport enthusiasts a taste of exciting things to come.

Practice run offers glimpse of motorsport plans

NNM director and promoter Faizel Cassim is committed to establishing a motor sport hub in Northern KwaZulu-Natal, with an emphasis on wholesome family fun.

“We want to get people off the streets and out of the pubs, and give them a safe place to play, with age-appropriate motor sport fun for every member of the family to enjoy,” said Faizel.

Raceway plans to expand motorsport activities

While dirt oval track racing officially starts on March 28, future plans include drifting, spinning, go-carting and remote control (RC) car racing, as well as show ‘n shine and sound competitions.

“By the end of the year, we also want to construct a 200m drag strip (known in racing circles as a 1/8 mile).

“Our intention is to open up drag racing to people with budget cars. Any car can race. They will not reach very high speeds, but it’s fun,” Faizel added.

Faizel’s wife, Razia, is NNM’s promoter and admin officer. The couple took over the oval track on November 6, obtaining a lease from the Newcastle Local Municipality as the town’s official oval track promoters.

They have since laboured tirelessly to bring the venue back up to standard, erecting poles for lighting, tiling the floors of the main building, installing new fencing and conducting repairs to the facility.

NNM offers both competitor and non-competitor membership. World of Motorsport ZA (WOMZA) accreditation is required for competitors.

NNM’s grand opening takes place on March 28 at the Newcastle Oval Track in Hardwick Street. Gates open at 11:00 and racing starts from 17:00.
