Vryheid parkrun shines despite rainy conditions

Vryheid parkrun embraces rain, celebrates milestones, personal bests, and inspiring community participation.

Despite wet and rainy conditions on Saturday, a small but enthusiastic group of about 20 participants gathered for another uplifting edition of the Vryheid parkrun.

Community spirit endures in wet conditions

While the weather kept numbers lower than usual, the spirit of the event remained strong, with runners, walkers and volunteers embracing the conditions and making the most of the morning. Parkrun continues to offer a welcoming space for people of all ages and fitness levels, whether running competitively, walking for health, or simply enjoying time outdoors. Beyond physical fitness, it fosters a sense of community, connection and encouragement, which was once again evident throughout the event.

Volunteers recognised for dedication

On behalf of the participants, organisers extended a heartfelt thank you to the volunteers who made the event possible. Special appreciation was given to the marshals, parkwalkers and tailwalker who ensured everyone could safely take part, as well as the finish line volunteers for their encouragement and friendly support.

Top performers celebrated

Mamush Bekele secured his third first-place finish, with Phumlani Vidima taking second place. Both runners were congratulated on their strong performances.

Among the women, Ntando Ndlovu claimed the top spot. Known as one of the most dedicated and inspiring participants, Ntando is often seen completing the course alongside her two young children. This time, running solo, she delivered an impressive performance to finish first among the ladies.

Young talent also shone through on the day. Kwandokuhle Gamede, despite arriving more than 20 minutes after the start due to transport delays, went on to complete the course in an impressive 41 minutes, a performance that drew admiration from fellow parkrunners.

Personal bests and milestones

Although there were no visiting runners this week, four participants achieved personal best times. Congratulations went to Malusi, Gcinekile, Vuyisile and Nelisiwe for their achievements.

A special milestone was also celebrated, with volunteer Natalie marking her 50th parkrun, a testament to the vital role volunteers play in sustaining the weekly event.

Two of Vryheid’s most dedicated parkrunners were also recognised. Daan completed his 296th event, while Thembi reached an impressive 145 runs.

Parkrun highlights inclusivity and encouragement

Even in the rain, the event once again highlighted what makes parkrun so special, a supportive, inclusive community where every participant, from front runner to tailwalker, is encouraged and celebrated.
