Community asked to support Lerina’s ALS fight

Community unites to support Lerina Buitendag following ALS diagnosis and growing medical needs.

Friends and family have come together in support of 47-year-old Lerina Buitendag, a devoted wife and mother of two, following her recent diagnosis with ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis), a progressive neurological disease.

Beloved community member

Well known in the community, Lerina has for years been a familiar and friendly face at a local pharmacy, where she has assisted countless residents with care and compassion.

Described by loved ones as ‘a bright light’ and someone who ‘makes everyone around her feel seen, supported, and valued’, Lerina has touched the lives of many through her kindness, compassion and passion for life.

Passion for dance leaves lasting impact

For nearly the past 10 years, Lerina has also been an integral part of the Danceology family, where her love for dance has left a lasting impression on those around her.

“Lerina is loving, bubbly, compassionate, and the kind of person who brings heart and soul to everything she does,” said her dance teacher and close friend, Nadine. “She doesn’t just dance — she brings emotion and joy to every step.”

Dance has long been one of Lerina’s greatest passions, with her involvement spanning multiple styles including contemporary, jazz, Bollywood and hip hop. Reflecting on a standout moment, Nadine said one of their most special memories was when the team competed at the Dance Waves SA Championships last year.

“It was an unforgettable moment when we brought home gold medals,” Nadine recalled. “Lerina was right there celebrating with us — full of energy, pride, and her signature smile. That’s who she is.”

Diagnosis changes everything

However, in December 2025, Lerina and her family’s lives changed dramatically when she was diagnosed with ALS, a condition that affects nerve cells responsible for voluntary muscle movement.

Her husband, Cobus Buitendag, said the progression of the disease has already been rapid.

“In just a few months since her diagnosis, we have already seen how quickly this disease progresses,” he said. “My wife has completely lost the use of her left arm, and she is starting to lose strength in her legs as well. Simple, everyday tasks are becoming more difficult.”

ALS gradually robs individuals of their ability to move, speak and eventually breathe, placing immense emotional and financial strain on families.

“To make matters even harder, my wife may soon no longer be able to continue working, and we unfortunately do not have an insurance or disability policy in place that can support us financially,” Cobus explained. “We are also parents to two children who are currently in school.”

Strength in the face of adversity

Despite the challenges, Lerina has continued to show remarkable strength and resilience.

“Her positivity and grace in the face of such adversity are deeply inspiring to everyone around her,” said Nadine.

Fundraiser launched to support family

A fundraising campaign has since been launched by Cobus and loved ones to help cover mounting medical costs, therapy, and care needs as the family navigates the difficult road ahead.

“Your support will help us access critical ALS treatments that may slow the progression of the disease, cover medical and therapy costs not supported by medical aid, help maintain some quality of life for my wife as we fight this disease, and support our family as we navigate this extremely difficult journey,” said Cobus.

The family is appealing to friends, extended family and the wider community for support.

“Every contribution, no matter the amount, will make a meaningful difference,” he added. “If you are unable to donate, sharing this campaign would mean just as much.”

Community called to stand together

For those closest to Lerina, the call for support is deeply personal.

“Lerina has spent years uplifting others with her kindness, her laughter, and her passion for dance,” Nadine said. “Now it is our turn to stand beside her and support her through this journey.”
