Community honours Chumpa Singh at memorial gathering

Family and friends honoured her legacy at a heartfelt memorial, celebrating her compassion, faith and lasting impact.

Last Wednesday (March 25), family, friends and community members gathered at the NOFTA Hall to celebrate and honour the life of the late Chumpa Singh, who passed away 12 years ago after a battle with cancer.

The memorial – hosted by her husband, Bully Singh – served as both a tribute to her legacy and a reminder of the enduring impact she had on those around her.

The event drew attendees from across the country – including Ladysmith, Newcastle, Gauteng and Pietermaritzburg – reflecting the wide reach of Chumpa Singh’s influence. Remembered as a deeply spiritual woman, her life was marked by compassion, service and unwavering faith.

A series of guest speakers paid tribute to her legacy, each highlighting different aspects of her life and the values she embodied.

Suvesha Ramdas – CANSA

Suvesha Ramdas from CANSA spoke about the importance of cancer awareness and education. Addressing the audience – many of whom have been personally affected by the disease – she emphasised that early diagnosis can save lives. She described Chumpa Singh as a loving and generous individual, encouraging those present to honour her memory by ‘turning grief into purpose’ and striving to ‘love more and give more’, as Chumpa did throughout her life.

Madhu Govinda Das – International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON)

Madhu Govinda Das from ISKCON reflected on her deep spiritual connection and commitment to selfless service. He spoke of her dedication to feeding and supporting destitute families, noting that her home was always open to anyone in need. Remembering her as a courageous and faithful individual, he shared that she never complained, often reminding others to ‘trust the Lord’. He added that although she has passed on, her soul and legacy remain a guiding force, especially for the younger generation.

Family tributes also formed a meaningful part of the programme.

Shanu Singh – niece

Shanu Singh, a niece of Chumpa’s, spoke of the family’s longstanding involvement with NOFTA and their shared commitment to charitable work. For her, Chumpa encouraged unity and togetherness, prompting Shanu to call on those present to share their joy and unity in remembering her.

Ravindra, Nico and Amit Singh – sons

Although two of her sons could not attend, their heartfelt message was read aloud by Morris Gajoo. In their tribute, they reflected on their mother’s life as one lived with intention and awareness. They described her as a woman who never sought recognition, yet quietly served her family and community with humility and grace. “She did not merely exist – she truly lived,” their message read, adding that her simplicity and authenticity were qualities that could not be replicated. They concluded with a reflection: “The way you live is the way you die.”

In closing, Bully Singh expressed deep gratitude to all who contributed to the success of the memorial. “I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to the EXCO, members and support staff for their invaluable assistance in arranging such a truly memorable tribute to my wife, ” he said.

“Your kindness, dedication and support have meant more to me than words can express. I am deeply grateful for the effort and care you all put into making this occasion so special. Thank you once again for standing with me and my family.”
