Winter parkrun kicks off with personal bests, milestones and strong community spirit.

The winter timetable got off to a brisk start on Saturday morning, with runners gathering bright and early for the weekly 08:00 parkrun.

Sibiya leads with personal best

Tyson Sibiya led the field, cruising into first place in an impressive personal best time. Among the visitors, Lara Matthysen claimed the top spot in the women’s category with a strong performance.

Milestones celebrated

It was also a morning of milestones, with Duncan Kelly completing his 50th parkrun and Elisma Pretorious celebrating her 100th event, both drawing warm applause from fellow participants.

Wave of personal bests

A remarkable 21 runners recorded personal best times on the day, highlighting the community’s growing strength and enthusiasm. Congratulations went to Tyson, Suhail, Alex, Phumlani, Frederik, Charl, Sindy, Ilke, Ntando, Nkosikhona, Zander, Thabani, Louise, Abel, Alta M, Sonja, Janette, Dawie, Alta N, Willie and Nelisiwe.

Visitors add to vibrant atmosphere

With the school holidays underway, the event also saw an influx of visiting runners and families. Some were familiar faces, while others experienced the Vryheid parkrun for the first time. Organisers said it was a pleasure to welcome both returning and new participants, adding to the warm and inclusive atmosphere that has become a hallmark of the Saturday run.
