Bus crashes through barrier on P483, injures learners
Ten learners were injured as a result of the accident.
A bus transporting about 70 learners crashed through a road barrier earlier this morning (April 14) on the P483, Madadeni Road.
Learners treated at the scene
According to Graig Botha of Kwazulu Private Ambulance Services, three students sustained serious injuries, including suspected spinal trauma and multiple fractures, requiring medical intervention.
“An additional seven patients were treated for minor injuries, ranging from soft tissue trauma to deep lacerations,” said Botha.
Speaking to the Newcastle Advertiser, the driver claimed that a mechanical fault may have caused the crash, resulting in the bus veering off the road.
“I could not stop it. It felt like the wheels were moving in one direction and the steering wheel in another,” he said.
“I am just relieved that the children are safe.”
Cause still under investigation
The exact cause of the crash remains unclear and is subject to further investigation.
