DA to take legal action against uThukela
The decision comes after numerous unsuccessful attempts by the party to intervene and resolve the ongoing water crisis.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) in KwaZulu-Natal has announced that it will take legal action against uThukela District Municipality for its failure to provide consistent water services to communities.
Numerous unsuccessful attempts to resolve water crisis
This announcement was made during a media briefing held in Durban today (April 29). DA head in the uThukela District and Member of Parliament, Maliyakhe Shelembe, said the decision comes after numerous unsuccessful attempts by the party to intervene and resolve the ongoing water crisis.
According to Shelembe, the DA has engaged the municipality multiple times in an effort to ensure that residents receive reliable access to water. However, these efforts have not yielded meaningful results.
“We didn’t just come to this conclusion to go to court. We have made many attempts to ensure that people are receiving water,” Shelembe said.
Prolonged water challenges in the district
uThukela District Municipality has for several years faced challenges related to water supply, including ageing infrastructure, alleged sabotage and financial constraints. As a result, communities in the district have experienced prolonged water shortages, forcing residents to rely on water tankers, rivers and boreholes, which has led to many protests over the years.
The DA now plans to approach the courts, arguing that the municipality has failed in its responsibility to deliver essential services to the community. The party says it’s not easy to see business people going without water, because that might lead to loss of jobs; and it’s also not easy seeing rural communities without water, because that could lead to an increase in disease. These factors have played a part in the DA’s decision.
