Vryheid runners show endurance at Zululand Ultra

VAC athletes deliver strong performances at Zululand Ultra Marathon events.

Athletes from Vryheid Athletic Club recently showcased their determination and endurance at the Zululand Ultra Marathon, taking on both the 56km and 10km events with great spirit.

Ntokozo Mbatha completed the 56km event in a time of 06:53:01, while Lungani Mthethwa finished in 04:59:00.

In the 10km event, Smangele Nguni crossed the finish line in 00:48:57, achieving second category position, while Buyisizwe Kunene completed the race in 01:05:42, finishing 6th in her category.

Training continues despite conditions

The Saturday long runs continue. The athletes continue to train hard as the season progresses. Early morning runs in the dark, headlamps glowing, jackets on, but always moving forward together as a team.

Eyes on Comrades 2026

Looking ahead, focus is also shifting to the Comrades Marathon 2026. The 45-day countdown has begun, with 15 club members preparing for the iconic race. This year’s motto, “Ska fela moya” (Setswana), reminds athletes of resilience and spirit: “moya” meaning spirit, breath, or soul; “fela” meaning to end or be used up; and “ska” meaning don’t.

Final preparations underway

Wishing all athletes strength in their final preparations.
