Madadeni doctor released on R15K bail

A former Madadeni surgeon, accused of sexual assault, has been granted bail after appearing in court today.

A former Madadeni orthopaedic surgeon (66), who is accused of sexually assaulting four female patients between September 2025 and April 2026, was granted R15,000 bail in the Madadeni Magistrate’s Court this morning (May 8).

He was arrested on Tuesday, April 28, after a ‘whistleblower’ allegedly informed police about the offences while he was employed at Madadeni Regional Hospital.

It is alleged that the accused inappropriately touched patients’ breasts and other private parts and, in some cases, forced them to perform sexual acts while under his care.

He first appeared in court on Thursday, April 30, for bail information purposes.

State does not oppose bail

During the official bail hearing this morning, state prosecutor Mrs Thulisile Shabalala confirmed that the State would not oppose bail.

She said the State believed the accused was unlikely to tamper with witnesses, was not considered a flight risk, and that his release would not result in public unrest.

Shabalala and defence attorney Allen Kelly both read statements into the court record before delivering their closing arguments.

Following a brief adjournment, presiding officer Magistrate Nkosi delivered judgment and granted him bail of R15,000.

Strict bail conditions imposed

Magistrate Nkosi said he must report to Newcastle police station every Monday and Friday between 06:00 and 18:00. He is also prohibited from contacting or interfering with State witnesses and may not go near Madadeni Regional Hospital.

In addition, the accused may not leave KwaZulu-Natal or South Africa while the case is ongoing.

The matter was postponed to June 26.

The accused intends to plead not guilty.

KZN Health Department responds

KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health spokesperson Ntokozo Maphisa said the department was aware of the matter.

“Without prejudice, we wish to state unequivocally that we condemn any form of abuse or violation of any individual, particularly within a healthcare setting where individuals may be vulnerable,” said Maphisa.

“The safety, dignity and well-being of patients remains our highest priority. The matter is now in the hands of law enforcement and we will fully co-operate with the investigation. The department is also initiating its own internal processes in line with applicable regulations.”
