Power outage at Tayside worsens Dundee and Glencoe water crisis
A power outage at the Tayside pump station has forced fresh water restrictions in Dundee and Glencoe.
A power outage at the Tayside pump station has further disrupted water supply to Dundee and Glencoe, forcing Umzinyathi District Municipality to implement restrictions.
Municipal spokesperson Thandeka Ngobese confirmed today, Tuesday, May 19, that the problem had been reported to Eskom and officials were awaiting repairs.
Water restrictions implemented
“The report we received from the Technical Services Department indicated that there was a power outage at the Tayside pump station. The issue has been reported to Eskom and they were waiting for the problem to be fixed,” said Thandeka.
She added that officials were monitoring the situation and would provide updates as developments unfolded.
The upper parts of Glencoe have not had water for around three weeks, while parts of Dundee have also suffered. Only lower-lying areas have had water due to gravity feed.
According to reservoir readings supplied by the municipality at 07:00, Dundee reservoirs were sitting at 58%, while the Glencoe reservoir stood at 50%.
Municipal officials confirmed that both Dundee and Glencoe would be placed under water restrictions from 08:00 due to the Tayside station being offline.
The latest setback comes after residents in both towns endured ongoing water interruptions linked to infrastructure failures, faulty pumps and electricity outages.
