Motorists demand action after cow causes crash near Glencoe

Residents say wandering cattle and poor lighting are creating dangerous conditions on roads near Glencoe.

Motorists in Glencoe are calling for stricter action against livestock owners who allow cattle to roam freely through the town after another collision involving a cow last weekend.

The driver escaped serious injury after crashing into a cow that had wandered onto the main road between Glencoe and Dundee after sunset.

Poor lighting worsens danger

“The animal was impossible to see in the dark,” the motorist said.

The vehicle was written off in the collision, and the cow died at the scene.

Residents say wandering cattle have become a growing concern, particularly around lower Celle Street and nearby roads, where livestock are frequently seen grazing close to traffic.

Poor street lighting in parts of the area has further increased the danger for motorists travelling at night.

Glencoe SAPS confirmed that police are aware of the problem and have contacted the traffic department regarding enforcement measures aimed at keeping livestock off public roads.

It remains unclear who owned the animal involved in the latest accident.

On Sunday afternoon, several people were reportedly seen cutting up the carcass, apparently to remove the meat.

By-law concerns raised again

The incident has once again placed the spotlight on the enforcement of municipal by-laws in Endumeni.

Residents and business owners have for years complained about inconsistent action relating to public drinking, noise disturbances, wandering livestock and informal businesses operating from public spaces.

Business owners have also raised concerns about unregulated mechanics working from residential streets and pavements.

The municipality has previously urged residents and businesses to comply with by-laws aimed at promoting a safer and more orderly environment.
