Hawkers’ shelters burn during protest near Dundee taxi rank

Hawkers’ shelters were torched near Dundee taxi rank as tensions linked to anti-foreigner protests escalated.

Hawkers’ shelters were set alight and several people were reportedly assaulted during an impromptu protest on Smith Street near the Dundee taxi rank on Monday morning.

The cause of the protest has not yet been officially confirmed, although a witness who spoke to the Courier on condition of anonymity claimed it formed part of the ongoing anti-foreigner protests spreading across parts of the country.

Fire brigade called to the scene

The Endumeni Fire Brigade was dispatched to extinguish the flames after the shelters alongside the wall on Smith Street were set on fire.

SAPS had not yet confirmed whether any arrests had been made at the time of publication.

The shelters have previously been the subject of complaints from nearby residents and management at the Eventide Home, particularly regarding smoke from fires allegedly lit in the area.

Residents at the home, including some who rely on oxygen support daily, have repeatedly raised concerns about the impact the smoke has on their health and quality of life.

Traffic in the area was affected while emergency services responded to the scene.
