uMzinyathi apologises as water protests intensify

uMzinyathi Municipality says urgent interventions are underway to restore water supply to affected communities

uMzinyathi District Municipality has acknowledged growing frustration among residents following protests over ongoing water supply interruptions affecting several communities in the district.

Following yesterday’s impromptu march on the municipality’s Victoria Street head office, a statement released by uMzinyathi said it is working with Mngeni-uThukela Water to address the continuing water reticulation problems that have left areas of Dundee, Glencoe and surrounding communities without a stable supply.

Last week, a municipal spokesperson blamed an Eskom outage at the Tayside pump station for the outage, which Eskom vehemently denied.

New pumps planned to improve supply

“New water pumps are being procured and installed as part of efforts to improve water distribution and stabilise supply.

“Technical teams are also continuing with repair work and investigations into infrastructure failures contributing to the disruptions,” said Deputy Mayor Councillor Nothile Zungu.

“We sincerely apologise to all affected communities for the inconvenience caused by the ongoing water challenges,” said Zungu.

“The municipality is in active discussions with Mngeni-uThukela Water to ensure that these problems are resolved as quickly as possible.”

She said the municipality remained committed to restoring a stable water supply and improving water reticulation infrastructure across the district.

The municipality appealed for calm and patience while emergency interventions are implemented, adding that cooperation between government structures, community leaders and residents remained important in resolving the crisis.

Officials also reiterated that ‘access to water remains a priority service delivery responsibility and that all available resources are being mobilised to restore consistent supply as quickly as possible.’
