62-year-old has heart set on 11th Comrades this weekend

Lincoln Sibiya stands on the brink of another remarkable achievement.

Local runner Lincoln Sibiya (62) is ready to take on his 11th Comrades Marathon when thousands of runners gather for the iconic ultra-marathon on Sunday (June 14).

Having completed months of dedicated training and preparation, Sibiya now stands on the brink of another remarkable achievement as he prepares to tackle one of the world’s toughest endurance races.

The road to Pietermaritzburg

The 2026 Comrades Marathon, the 99th edition of the historic event, will be an ‘up run’ this year. The gruelling route covers approximately 87 kilometres from Durban City Hall to the Hollywoodbets Scottsville Racecourse in Pietermaritzburg, with runners required to complete the course within a 12-hour cut-off time.

Widely regarded as the world’s oldest and most prestigious ultra-marathon, the race continues to attract athletes from across South Africa and around the globe.

Chasing an 11th finish

For Sibiya, Sunday’s race represents more than just another marathon. Taking part in a Comrades Marathon for an 11th time is a testament to years of commitment, discipline and perseverance. Not to mention the fact that he is in his 60s!

Completing even a single Comrades Marathon is considered a major accomplishment in the running community, making Sibiya’s continued participation an inspiring example of dedication and endurance.

Community behind him

As the countdown to Sunday’s start draws closer, messages of support and encouragement continue to come from friends, fellow runners and community members who will be cheering him on throughout the journey from Durban to Pietermaritzburg.

Sibiya’s determination and consistency have made him a source of inspiration for many aspiring runners, while his achievements continue to bring pride to the local community.

Ready for race day

With the hard work done and preparations complete, attention now turns to race day itself. Like thousands of runners preparing to line up at the start, Sibiya’s focus is on delivering another strong performance and reaching the finish line once again.

As the 2026 Comrades Marathon approaches, all eyes will be on the local runner as he embarks on his quest for an impressive 11th Comrades finish.

The Comrades Marathon will be broadcast live on SABC 2 and the official Comrades YouTube channel.
