Police share tips to improve personal safety

Newcastle SAPS urge residents to stay alert, avoid isolated areas and take practical steps to reduce safety risks.

Newcastle SAPS has shared practical safety tips to help residents protect themselves and reduce the risk of becoming crime victims.

“As a reminder, the SAPS Newcastle Communication Department offers the following practical suggestions for personal safety and security that you can and should incorporate into your daily routine, regardless of where you are, whether at work or at home,” said Newcastle SAPS corporate communications officer Lizzy Arumugam.

Stay alert when walking

Residents are encouraged not to walk alone, but rather in groups, as there is strength in numbers.

Arumugam advised people to project confidence and avoid appearing timid or lost while walking.

She also recommended dressing appropriately and wearing shoes that would allow a person to run if necessary.

Valuables such as watches and jewellery should not be displayed openly.

“Always be alert to your surroundings. Look around, be observant and do not become distracted by telephone conversations, window shopping or other activities,” she said.

Residents should walk in well-lit, high-traffic areas where they can see and be seen.

Sidewalks should be used where possible, and pedestrians are advised to stay near the street and away from dark building entrances.

Shortcuts through alleys and wooded areas should be avoided.

Carrying a cellphone and keeping it readily accessible is also recommended.

“Have a cellphone and keep it readily available, such as in your hand, but do not allow yourself to become distracted by texting, checking social media or other activities. Immediately report all suspicious activities to the police,” Arumugam added.

Trust your instincts

If someone appears to be following you on foot, Arumugam advises crossing the street immediately and moving to a location where other people are likely to be present, such as a business or public facility.

“Above all else, always trust your instincts; they are usually correct. If something doesn’t seem right, immediately remove yourself from the situation,” she concluded.
