Sentraal crushes Volksrust to boost semi-final hopes
Sentraal defeated Volksrust 61-21 to gain revenge and strengthen its push for the semi-finals.
Despite freezing conditions, Sentraal turned up the heat on the rugby field to secure a convincing 61-21 victory over Volksrust and keep its semi-final hopes firmly on track.
The win was particularly satisfying for the home side, who were beaten 40-19 by Volksrust earlier in the season on the other side of Majuba Pass.
Sentraal struck first through Kriel, but Volksrust responded soon afterwards and looked the stronger side during the opening exchanges. The visitors enjoyed the majority of possession and territory, limiting Sentraal’s attacking opportunities.
However, Volksrust failed to convert their dominance into points and were made to pay when Sentraal found another gear.
Nine-try performance secures impressive victory
Kriel crossed for his second try of the afternoon before the match swung decisively in the hosts’ favour when a Volksrust player was shown a red card for foul language.
Sentraal capitalised on the numerical advantage, running in a series of tries to establish a commanding 42-7 lead at half-time.
The home side continued where it left off after the break. Bearings Hlongwane added his name to the scoresheet, following in the footsteps of his brother, who had already crossed the try line earlier in the match.
Volksrust managed two second-half tries in an attempt to reduce the deficit, but the outcome was never in doubt as Sentraal maintained control.
By full-time, Sentraal had scored nine tries in an emphatic performance. VK Buthelezi was equally impressive with the boot, converting all but one of the tries.
After the match, Volksrust congratulated Sentraal on the victory and acknowledged that they had been unprepared for the challenge posed by the home side.
Sentraal now turn their attention to a crucial away fixture against the Jaguars in Ladysmith on Saturday.
The team will also look to strengthen its position in the standings when its postponed home match against Vryheid is played in Glencoe next Wednesday evening.
Supporters are encouraged to come out and back the team as it continues its push for a place in the semi-finals.
