Anglers complete APL season with closed competition
The Angling Professional League closed its season at Sandford with top anglers competing for honours in Scaled and Non-Scaled categories.
The Angling Professional League (APL) officially brought its competitive season to a close with its highly anticipated Closed Competition, which was open exclusively to registered league members.
Unlike the regular season fixtures held at Zaaihoek Dam, the final competition took place at Sandford – a venue many anglers had not competitively fished at for more than a year.
APL season ends with competitive finale
The change of scenery created excitement among competitors, with many hoping the unfamiliar waters would produce improved catches after several challenging outings at Zaaihoek.
Despite the optimism, fishing conditions remained demanding, with catches staying relatively modest throughout the day.
However, the event still provided an enjoyable atmosphere, allowing anglers to share camaraderie, fellowship and reflect on the season.

Top anglers secure competition honours
In the Scaled Category, Mohamed Mia of Challengers Angling Club delivered an impressive performance, landing the heaviest carp of the competition at 3.390kg.
His catch secured him first place and the R2500 prize.
His teammate, Vis Govender, claimed second place with a 3.225kg carp and received R1000, while T Haripersadh completed the top three with a 3.020kg catch, earning R750.
In the Non-Scaled Category, Rodney Ince of Stillwaters Angling Club claimed victory after landing a 770g barbel, securing the R1500 first prize.
Avien Bhojairam of Breakwaters Angling Club finished second with a 515g catch to win R750, while Ropesh Goli of Challengers Angling Club placed third with a 495g catch, receiving R500.
League prepares for next season
The APL extends its sincere appreciation to its principal sponsors, Mohamed Midas and AA Coaches, whose continued support has contributed to the promotion and growth of competitive angling throughout the season.
The league also thanks its officials, affiliated clubs, members and supporters for their dedication and commitment in ensuring another successful year.
Attention now turns to the APL annual general meeting, where preparations and strategic planning for the 2026/2027 season will begin.
The league confirmed that several operational improvements and competitive enhancements are being considered as part of its plans to further develop the sport.
Members of the public interested in joining the Angling Professional League are encouraged to contact Matthew Shunmugam on 082 807 8919 for placement within an affiliated club.
The APL remains committed to creating a stronger, more competitive and vibrant future for organised angling.
