Boys to Men imbizo promotes health and education in Vryheid

Vryheid Methodist Church united men and boys to promote health, education and community empowerment.

Vryheid Methodist celebrated Mandela Day by gathering all boys and men in the community and inviting male guests, including Dr Z.N. Nkosi (medical doctor), Mr N. Mathonsi (professional nurse), Mr M. Silimwane (pharmacist), Mr N. Ndimande (dietitian) and Mr M. Mayekiso (wellness practitioner from Mthashana TVET College).

Rev A. Gxamza gave an outline of the 67 minutes of Mandela Day as a holistic approach to church and community development. He used the quote by John Wesley, “Do all the good you can,” as a guide for living a compassionate life of service.

Doctor raises awareness about prostate cancer

Dr Z.N. Nkosi focused his speech on prostate cancer, one of the most common health concerns affecting men. He elaborated on Stage 1 and Stage 2 prostate cancer, explaining that these are the most treatable stages because the cancer is still confined to the prostate gland and has not spread to other organs.

He also spoke about the early symptoms and stressed that early detection saves lives. Dr Nkosi encouraged all men aged 40 years and above to undergo regular blood tests known as the Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) test because they are at higher risk, especially where there is a family history of the disease.

Men asked several questions during the session, all of which were answered.

Importance of taking medication correctly

Pharmacist Mr M. Silimwane stressed the importance of taking medicines exactly as prescribed and completing the full course of treatment. He strongly discouraged sharing medication with other people, even if they appear to have the same illness.

Healthy eating and exercise encouraged

Mr N. Ndimande spoke about the importance of maintaining a healthy diet. He encouraged everyone to eat three meals a day without overeating.

Using a clenched fist as an example, he explained that it represents the approximate size of a person’s stomach. He said overeating places unnecessary strain on the stomach, while skipping meals is also harmful because the body needs food to function properly. He emphasised that healthy eating has a significant impact on overall well-being and highlighted the importance of regular exercise in maintaining a healthy body weight.

Education opportunities highlighted

The team from Mthashana TVET College was represented by manager Mr M. Mayekiso, who stressed the importance of attending a TVET college. He encouraged men to consider enrolling, saying the education system provides many practical skills that are needed in South Africa.

Guests thanked for their contribution

The vote of thanks was delivered by Society Steward Mr S. Malevu, and all the guest speakers received tokens of appreciation.

The event concluded with all the men sharing a meal together.
