Zulu wedding highlights Vryheid High’s Heritage Day event
Vryheid High learners celebrate Heritage Day with traditional dress, Zulu wedding, and cultural foods.
Vryheid High School celebrated Heritage Day with great enthusiasm and cultural flair on Thursday. The event was a testament to the school’s commitment to promoting cultural awareness and appreciation among its learners.
The day began with the pupils and teachers dressing up in traditional attire that represented various cultural backgrounds, including Muslim, Hindu, Afrikaans and Zulu. This display of colourful and diverse clothing set the tone for a day of learning and celebration.
One of the highlights of the event was a traditional Zulu wedding ceremony, where AJ wedded Amahle in a joyous celebration of love and culture. Stone (a support staff member) officiated the wedding, adding a touch of authenticity to the proceedings. The ceremony was accompanied by singing and dancing, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the Zulu tradition.
To complement the cultural festivities, traditional food – including samoosas, tripe and other local delicacies – were sold, allowing learners to sample and appreciate the diverse culinary traditions of South Africa.
The school community extends its gratitude to: Ms Booyen for organising the delicious traditional food that added flavour to the celebration; the Grade 11 learners for their exceptional organisation of the Zulu traditional wedding ceremony; and the principal for supporting and allowing this informative event to take place, promoting cultural awareness and appreciation among the learners.
This celebration aligns with the spirit of Heritage Day, which aims to promote cultural awareness, understanding and unity among South Africans. By embracing their diverse cultural heritage, Vryheid High School learners and staff demonstrated the importance of preserving and celebrating the country’s rich history and traditions.
