Throwback Thursday: Town Hall stands as landmark since 1899

The Town Hall in Scott Street was officially opened in 1899 and remains an important landmark, with a working clock and rich heritage.

Did you know that the Newcastle Town Hall in Scott Street was officially opened on July 28, 1899, and has stood in the centre of town ever since?

Built to mark Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee, this landmark later survived war, occupation and changing times.

Its famous clock was installed in 1901 and still works today. The eight-day mechanical clock is reset weekly by maintenance man Peter Holliday.

Declared a National Monument in 1977, the Town Hall remains one of Newcastle’s most treasured historic buildings.
