The ‘Maroon Machine’ took on Piet Retief Rugby Club in Piet Retief over the weekend.
Instead of going on the attack, Vryheid seemed to wait on the defensive line and ‘allow’ Piet Retief to play their game in the first half. In their stride, Piet Retief stormed to a 31-0 lead at half-time.
At the break, Coach Lwazi read the Vryheid team the riot act and made some tactical substitutions. The fire was lit, so to speak, and the players were finally running on all cylinders.
The second-half surge was led by Danie Nel, Khumbulani ‘Sakkie’ Khoza and Carl Holtzhausen.
The action was frenetic and Vryheid started exerting pressure on Piet Retief’s defensive line. However, numerous handling errors close to the Piet Retief try-line hampered the comeback as they began to pile points on the scoreboard. The errors cost them at least three tries.
After the chaos had died down, Piet Retief had hung on to win the game 31-19.
‘Man of the match’ awards for Vryheid Rugby Club went to Carl Holtzhausen for the backline and Mfundo Mdadona for the forwards.
Vryheid Rugby Club would like to invite the entire community to join the ‘Maroon Machine’ on Saturday at Cecil Emmett Park, which will see Vryheid Rugby Club tackle Volkrust Rugby Club.
