Stop disturbing the peace!

Madam – Noise pollution (motorbikes in particular, which other readers have been vocal about too) is disturbing the peace.

Our homes are very close to each other and it’s vital to observe some respect for your neighbours. Behaviour that is deliberate and negligent of laws and regulations is unacceptable.

Acceptable noise levels are set at an international level of about 55decibels (vary for different things and for time of day/night). A quick check on Google reveals even the World Health Organisation, the EU, Australia, Nieu Zealand et al have set acceptable levels for noise in different areas and different times.

Recently, my neighbourhood has been plagued by motorbike owners who stand in the street, start the bikes and rev the engines to levels of up to 125 dB and more – way higher than any acceptable levels – and continuing for five minutes or more.

Then they drive around the block and the whole circus is repeated. I’ve asked them twice to refrain from doing it. The answer? “Maar dis vir my so mooi”! (But it’s so beautiful).

This is unacceptable and the SAPS as well as Protection Services have confirmed that such behaviour is not allowed and is controlled by laws and regulations pertaining to noise pollution.

In fact, if the culprits continue with said behaviour, the offending article (motorbike, HiFi or whatever) is confiscated and will only be returned upon payment of a fine.The neighbourhood belongs to everybody living there and common consideration for others should be the credo: do unto others what you want to be done to you.
