In last week’s Courier, Mr Keys of the DA challenged the MEC for Transport in KZN to account for the alarming amount of road accidents and lack of road safety in the province.
However, my humble take on this crucial matter is:
It is the perception of many people out there that deaths on our roads, particularly during the festive season, are as a result of drinking and driving, bad driving habits, unroadworthy vehicles and speeding.
The fact of the matter is though, that some of the drivers have an immensely irresponsible attitude.
To mention but a few cases: overtaking as if the other vehicle were stationary; driving over the barrier line; driving under the influence of liquor or drugs; driving and using cellphones; the indisputable temptation of exceeding the speed limit when driving a fast vehicle.
It would be highly appreciated if Mr Keys would request the MEC to provide us with the registration numbers of cars from other provinces that were involved in the accidents, and those from the KZN province, for the sake of comparing who actually is to be blamed.
