MUCH HAS been said about the Nkandla issue but one of the disturbing things is what could have been done with that money. We so often hear how poverty has to be eliminated, and yet our government chooses to rather spend the money that could be used to alleviate poverty on themselves. Look at the cars they drive (Helen drives a 2003 Mercedes 230). The money spent on Nkandla could have paid for the following: * Three years of study, accommodation and meals for 1,000 university students; * RDP houses for 2,000 families; * 24 years of legal support for the Marikana families; * Seven new schools; * 1,230 nurses. This is wrong when so many people are struggling in our country. Makes you wonder if our government is really serious about helping the poor.
