The Executive Committee of the KwaZulu- Natal Christian Council wish to express its apprehension at the timing of the release of the Public Protectors report on the Nkandla debacle.
Whilst we realise that the Public Protector’s report needed to be released when it was ready and any delay in doing so might have compromised the integrity of both the report and the office, the way it has been received by all parties has not been helpful in the pursuit of truth and justice.
It cannot be denied that there may well be issues that merit interrogation in the report, it is however our concern that this may well get lost in the emotive election fever, and instead of an exercise in accountability and truth seeking, it has now given wings to the election campaigns and as a result, the full truth may never be known.
The KwaZulu-Natal Christian Council calls on political parties on all sides of the political divide to desist from using the report as an electioneering ploy, but rather focus on those issues affecting the lives of ordinary South Africans.
May these upcoming elections be peaceful and lead to all the people of this country benefiting from having credible and hardworking elected leaders. This is our prayer.
