Sir,
We are all happy with the sequence of events which saw a degree of sanity return to our town Council. We just hope that the ringleaders of this Reformation will push through with what they started and not cave in to the demands of the ‘Unenlightened’, which have sucked this town dry.
All well so far. Can we now return to the business of repairing this town, which is now nothing but a sad memory of what it once was…? An effort to clean up has since become visible, but we are still drowning in litter and falling down potholes, and sport dilapidated buildings in the centre of town. The entry routes to Dundee, especially from the Newcastle side, are still brimming with rubbish.
Denis Beckett once wrote that Dundee is a town that eats on tourism. Really…? Ja, well, that was long ago.
We now have tourism stakeholders who fight each other over petty squabbles and the biggest slice of the rather dried-up cake that now remains. Dundee is a filthy, shabby dump, if you compare it with other rural towns in this country, where tourism officers are turning their hometowns into colourful little jewels. Why would a tourist really stay here now? Just take a look at all the major travel and tourism magazines on sale in this country. How many articles on Dundee, and what it has to offer, have you seen…? And we are not talking about little write-ups that have been bought and paid for, and only benefit a select group of people.
Apart from tiger fishing at Jozini and trawling wildlife at Ndumo and Tembe, which feature more often than not in any travel magazine worth its salt, you will not find Dundee, except maybe a cursory notice to a way through towards Vryheid.
When was the last time any travel writer bothered to write about the Battlefields? What are we going to do about it?
Still irate but a bit less so
