‘Dad, you are so out of the loop’
When I stared at it in blank numbness, she burst out laughing before walking away, her parting statement being, “Dad, you are so out of the loop!”

I always thought I was with it when it came to social media. I had my Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger. I knew about WeChat and SnapChat, and I obviously had a BBM account. Add to that, Liveleaks and YouTube.
Then my daughter sends me a Vine and I am very confused. A six-second video, that’s it. You can hashtag and re-Vine it, but that is all it is. A six-second video!

I know fads come and go, and we live in an ever-evolving social media universe where information is king. But a six-second video spliced together to send a message or a commentary – is this really the way forward, the next leap into the social abyss?
Is that what we are reduced to, is that the sum total of the social media revolution? I do not know.
