Sir
We almost ran over a chap in Union Street on Saturday evening. Concerned, we stopped and tried to get him out the street with his only words being ‘hospital’. We phoned for an ambulance and an old scholar, Mfundo, stopped to help. After trying 10111 (no one answered). The internet number for Dundee SAPS doesn’t exist, Mfundo went to the police, only to be told ‘no the police can’t help it’s not their problem. They don’t put people into their bakkies and furthermore there are no available vehicles’. This man wasn’t drunk or high but had been beaten badly.
Where’s the compassion and ubuntu? What are the police there for if not to respond in an emergency?
The words ‘it’s not my job’ should not apply to the people in charge of our safety and security! To be fair, the EMRS were there within 15 minutes.
Thank you Mfundo for actually stopping and shame on the rest that just drove past this poor man.
