Madam – The road was long, listening to my heartbeat on the monitor as Dr Homan with care and warmth set my heart at ease knowing she was right there, while Dr Desai and his team got ready to perform a life-changing surgery. I couldn’t help but look back on the battle it took to get to this place, to this very moment.

For months I was starving because of two surgeries that went wrong that they thought was a success in a government hospital. By then I couldn’t open my jaw more than 10 mm, losing more weight by the day and finding myself in excruciating pain and having great difficulty to speak.

After months of struggling and not being able to eat, I reached out to Dr Desai who was willing to step in and fight the battle with me.

The battle with medical aid was intense from day one, but Dr Desai and his team, Ferzana and Nicky stood with me and fought daily with me till we finally got the approval we needed to give the go-ahead. Through the battle, one by one people from all over started taking hands with me.

From the women at the X-ray department at the Mediclinic who fought with me to get the CT done, to Dr van Niekerk and his amazing team who helped out. From Cecelia Spies for her legal advice to Tannie Magdale and Oom Willie van Wyk. From friends in Germany right and across to New Zealand where my sister and her family took hands with me, to the teachers and headmaster at Drakensberg Primary. Many dear friends stood with me, as well as my mom and dad.

Before my eyes closed I couldn’t help but smile at Dr Desai and say, “It’s a great day to save jaws today”

Now, weeks after the surgery, I’m able to eat apples and am well on my way to recovery, but I want to say thank you with all my heart to Dr Desai and his team, to Dr Homan thank you for the amazing anaesthetist you are. I want to thank God for bringing me through this.

Thank you to Newcastle Mediclinic and the nurses that looked after me so well. Thank you to each and everyone who walked this road with me, for every prayer and everything you gave, as well as all your support and friendship in this time; it was and still is truly appreciated.

The BATTLE is WON!!!
