I am a pensioner. At the age of 68-years-old, I have wanted a house of my own all my life. I have never had the finances to buy a home for myself and it was never part of my dream for me to expect someone to give me one FREE.
I read the article about Mr Mchunu, who is expecting a piece of ground and a new house for nothing. Does he know he will have to pay rates, water and lights, etc., which a home-owner has to pay every month? All my life I have worked hard to put a roof over my children’s heads, and food in their mouths.
And there was never enough of anything to save to enable me to buy a house. I paid rent, and water and lights every month and it was a continuous struggle. But NEVER did I expect or even wish for a free house.
My daughter, who is now 44-years-old, has just bought a house. She and her husband struggled to get finances to get together, and I know things are going to be even tighter for them financially having a home of their own.
They have children and school fees and everything else that goes with living day-to-day. But never was anything given to them on a plate, for free. They have had to work very, very hard to get where they are.
I don’t begrudge Mr Mchunu a home, but really how can he expect a free home on the ground given to him? There are so many people who are homeless, why is he any different?
