Madam – Loss of our heritage.
Is our town about to lose yet another piece of our heritage?
The old Masonic Lodge Building in Harding Street is gradually being demolished and unless something is done soon the town will lose a building which was built in 1892 (the rear part) and completed in 1902. The original part is now demolished and the rest is being stripped piece by piece. This is a beautiful building particularly on the inside and is protected by legislation which is being ignored.
This building has over the years been used not only for Masonic purposes but also as an occasional cinema and for weddings and other social events.
It survived the Boer War, being respected by Boer and Brit alike, but now is being demolished by uncaring people.
Our town needs to retain its history but does anyone really care?
Terry Smith
