Sports days, jazz festivals a waste of money

Think about it the next time someone says, ‘Let’s host a festival!’

Editor – While sports days and jazz festivals sound like great fun, one has to ask why so much money is wasted on them when residents have so little. Let’s not forget that we live in a region with high unemployment and failing infrastructure.

Yet both local and district municipalities seem desperate to squander our town’s precious resources on rather frivolous events. Can we not have a weekend go by when council or the district is wasting ratepayers’ money.

It is all well and good to give people entertainment, but a jazz festival caters for the ‘haves’ and not the poor. The Mayoral Cup is the same. While it may bring sport to our town, it does not foster anything long-term.

Where is real sports development in Ladysmith? How do any local soccer players ever get a chance to make it to the big leagues? It is all nice and well seeing the mayor playing goalie, but how does that help local sport? How do jazz players feed the poor.

Think about it the next time someone says, ‘Let’s host a festival!’
