Madam – “Newcastle makes a teen’s wish come true” on your front page last week refers.

I had tears in my eyes when I read this story. It always astounds me to read of instances where a community can come together to help each other out in times of desperate need!

I know what it’s like to try and support children through the difficult school years on a very tight budget. For parents it is often a fine balancing act of sacrifice, and it’s embarrassing to have to ask for help when you really need it. Most parents get themselves into debt for events like debs balls and matric farewells, because they try to give their child everything of the best to their own personal cost.

To all the school children out there: Times are very hard financially, even if your parents or guardians are working a steady job. The cost of even the little things you need or want just keeps increasing every day. Please think of that when you get cross with them for not buying you the latest gadget or fancy stationery or clothes.

We parents really try, but it’s heartbreaking when we cannot give you the world.

Appreciate the little things we do for you, because even that comes at a cost – making sure you have a good breakfast, a substantial lunch and something good to eat for dinner. We give you a roof over your head and a place to sleep at night. We save to give you a future devoid of the struggles we may face every day. We want you to succeed!

To all the “Newcastle Angels” that made Jean-Claude de Bruin’s night amazing – you will be truly blessed for your kindness. It is through people like you that a small community can come together. Your good deeds will never go unnoticed by the Lord, and what goes around will surely come around two fold for all who open their hearts to those who humbly ask for help.
