Municipality will NOT use my money for Maharaj house!

Let me be clear, the Newcastle Municipality WILL not use my tax money, to buy and renovate House Maharaj in Boundary Road, Lennoxton.

Madam – Municipality to acquire Mac Maharaj House, Newcastle Advertiser August 14 2015.

Let me be clear, the Newcastle Municipality WILL not use my tax money, to buy and renovate House Maharaj in Boundary Road, Lennoxton.

If the ruling party in Council try to do so, they can expect serious problems from the community who does not agree with the suggestion.

Mr. Mac Maharaj, the Zuma spin doctor was and will never be of any importance to me and thousands of tax payers in this town.

My response to the ANC, the ANC Mayor Cllr. Afzul Rehman, the Director of Housing & Land, Mr Muzi Shozi and Tameem Cajee are plain and simple:

“If you want to renovate the building and turn it into a museum, let the ANC and Mr. Maharaj pay for it from their coffers. We don’t want another Nkaaaaandla, renovated with taxpayers money.”

Response from Mayor, Afzul Rehman:

While the municipality has decided that it not be prioritised in this financial year, we have applied to provincial government to source funding for this project. However I am tempted to educate you on the history of this country.

While you may see Mr Maharaj as the “spin doctor” of the president, most of us still see him as a person who sacrificed his time, energy, family and belongings for the liberation of this country from a state that chose to kill its critics and those who thought about standing up against it.

Nkaaaaandla, as you put it, would not even have been discussed during that period. These heroes of the struggle played a critical role in fighting for freedom and have become an integral part of the history of this country.

Some of us would love to instil and teach this history to our children, and museums such as these will add to the education of our children and the protection of our history. It may be a good idea for you to visit these sites yourself.
