Winter is the season of colds and ‘flus, sneezing and coughing. ‘Flu (influenza) is caused by viruses that infect the nose, throat, sinuses, lungs and upper respiratory tract.

The first symptoms of colds on the other hand are mostly a sore throat, followed by sneezing and a runny nose.

Temperature may be slightly raised and a mild cough can develop. In the case of colds, fever is not common, but it does occur, it is not very high.

Fever is common with ‘flus, being as high as 38°C – 40°C and lasts for three to four days.

Sore throat, sneezing and a stuffy nose are experienced by victims of ‘flu, in this case these symptoms may occur sometimes.

Some simple precautionary measures include:

1. Drinking plenty of liquids to prevent dehydration.

2. Wash your hands regularly.

3. Avoid inhaling cigarette smoke.

4. Stay away from sick people.

5. Get your seasonal ‘flu vaccination timeously.

6. Take your vitamin supplements and immune boosters, get enough sleep and exercise regularly.
