Madam – I assume that Mac Maharaj’s house is fairly old and maybe it should become a national monument and preserved for its historical significant to South Africa.

However all historical buildings should be treated in the same manner. Unfortunately, some of the old monuments in Newcastle have already been destroyed. The “men’s club” in Harding Street, this architectural building will never been seen again. The “Tower House” on the corner of Scott and Bird streets, is so enclosed that one cannot see it anymore.

The “King’s Hotel” – gone! Even “Joubert’s House” in York Street may not escape being demolished. How many more national monuments are facing this threat? We should respect all monuments that form part of Newcastle and South Africa’s history.

After all, we all played a part in building this country. Should we allow the historical buildings to be destroyed?

By the way, Lych Gate, another national monument at the old cemetery, was erected by public subscriptions, made by companies and the public of Newcastle, which included members of the Indian community. There is a list of names at Fort Amiel.
