Madam – Regarding your article last week about teenagers seeking a high from drinking cough mixture.
The sad state of this town is that there is very little in the way of constructive events, entertainment or activities for teenagers. Many years ago, there was a bowling alley and even a place to play putt-putt. Now, there is literally nothing!
Teens tend to take this as an invitation to loiter around town and get up to mischief. Schools cannot take all the blame for children skipping class and doing shady things in local parks, and neither can parents who send their children out each morning thinking they are going to further their education.
We should rather be looking at leaders in this town that have it in their power and authority to do something to help the youth. How about bringing entertainment to Newcastle? How about having special rates for children at the golf courses?
Or even setting up paintball closer to town – maybe applying for permission at the municipality to build another putt-putt course or even a gaming arcade?
I think it’s a sad day when children have nothing better to do than get high off cough syrup. But I think that kind of situation speaks volumes about US as a community and less about the children that resort to it.
