Calcium is commonly found in the body and is absolutely essential for healthy bones and teeth as well as the skin and the regulation of many other bodily functions such as blood clotting. Dietary sources of calcium include milk, fish, nuts and fruit.
A deficiency in calcium can cause serious problems such as osteoporosis, eczema, colon cancer and a host of other diseases and conditions.
Calcium is found in the epidermis where it helps to regulate cell shedding to maintain consistent thickness of the layers of skin.
A high concentration of calcium in the epidermis causes rapid cell turnover while a low concentration causes slow cell turnover. A lack of calcium manifests as dry, thin, fragile skin.
Calcium also regulates normal skin color by acting on the melanocyte cells responsible for producing skin pigment (melanin).
