Don’t be a victim of crime this Easter holiday

Never give your pin to friends, family, the police or bank officials; they have no right to ask you for it

Geshy Singh

As usual, along with the merriment of the Easter holidays comes the need to be cautious against crime. Please, especially caution any elderly friends and family as they are soft targets from handbag theft to ATM crimes.

Avoid walking around with large amounts of cash and as far as possible opt to swipe your card when shopping as opposed to drawing cash then paying, which is both cheaper and safer. Be alert of your surroundings and make it aware that you are vigilant.

If you see suspicious looking individuals or feel uncomfortable then leave immediately. Rather use ATMs that are well lit and in a visible area. Keep your card at hand instead of digging in your wallet or handbag in front of the ATM, making you vulnerable. Decline assistance from anyone if the machine seems to not be in working order as this is could be a trap. Cover the keypad when entering your pin, be it at the ATM or in shops. Don’t worry if the cashier or the customer behind you seems offended, you have the right to privacy and this should be respected.

If your card is stolen or is swallowed by the machine, call your bank immediately and cancel the card. Also minimise the transfer and withdrawal limit on all accounts to reduce the withdrawal access any fraudsters may have gained access too. Be wary of online purchases on unverified sites to protect your information.

Ensure your cellphone number is activated with your bank account so that you are alerted of all transactions and can call your bank immediately. Never give your pin to friends, family, the police or bank officials; they have no right to ask you for it and if you do divulge your pin to anyone you are risking your own security.

No bank will email, SMS or call you requesting personal information so do not respond and rather report any suspicious communication to the fraud department of your bank. Happy holidays and be safe!
